Over the weekend, there were several controversial decisions in the Premier League. But, the disallowed goal for Manchester United was one of the top talking points.
Cristiano Ronaldo dispossessed Nick Pope after he had the ball at his feet for a free kick. But, a video filmed from the stands shows that Fabian Schar had poked the ball towards him in order to continue the play, after the referee had given a free kick. With the ball in motion, Ronaldo considered it up for challenge and went on to put the ball in the back of the net.
Manchester United’s draw against Newcastle United – refereeing howler once again?
At the time, the referee ruled it out since he read it as a miscommunication. However, Manchester United and their fans were convinced that the ball was in play. And as a result, the goal should have been allowed to stand.
But, despite VAR being available, the goal was not given even though it could have been a ‘clear and obvious error’ on the referee’s part. In the end, fans did feel like United were cheated out of the potential victory.
The match ended 0-0, with neither team being able to break the deadlock. And in the process, United became the team with the most 0-0 draws since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.
