Your neighbourhood kirana runs on pen, paper and memory. That is changing. On October 30, 2026, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal chaired the Bharat Commerce Chintan Shivir at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi. DPIIT and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) hosted the roundtable, and 40+ FMCG leaders attended, including HUL, Coca-Cola India, ITC, P&G, Marico, Britannia and Emami. The agenda was ONDC DigiDukaan, a plan to digitise how India’s 1.4 crore kiranas buy stock. What Makes ONDC DigiDukaan Different? Most kirana-tech efforts help shopkeepers sell online. DigiDukaan starts with procurement and treats the kirana as a buyer. Through one interface, a retailer can browse and order from multiple brands, distributors and wholesalers, with clear pricing, trade schemes and stock availability. It also doesn’t try to replace distributors. It strengthens existing relationships and adds a shared digital layer on top.

Less cash locked up in unsold stock means more working capital for the shopkeeper. The Five-Point Roadmap The roundtable agreed on five priorities: Common digital identity: one retailer ID that works across brands and distributors. Shared logistics and micro-warehousing: aiming for reliable next-day replenishment, even outside current delivery routes. Formal credit: financing linked to digital orders, reducing reliance on informal distributor credit. Plug-and-play tech: standard DMS connectors and catalogues to simplify onboarding. Realigned incentives: rewarding sales teams and distributors for digital ordering and wider retailer coverage. Who’s Already on Board? HUL, Marico, Colgate-Palmolive, Emami and Amul are participating through their distribution networks. ITC, Tata Consumer Products and Britannia are at various stages of integration.
Paytm for Business, Qwipo and Mulltiply.ai are live on the tech side, while ElasticRun, Shiprocket and India Post support logistics. Want more stories on India’s startup and commerce shifts? ONDC CEO Vibhor Jain noted that distributors are already largely online, while retailers lag behind. Closing that gap could make supply chains faster, cheaper and fairer for small shopkeepers. The next step is deeper participation in Mumbai, especially North Mumbai. The challenge now is commitment. The plan works only if FMCG companies, distributors and retailers all show up. FAQs
