Diwali usually belongs to the biggest stars. This year, the Tamil lineup is missing the usual Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay and Ajith Kumar vehicles, which leaves room for fresh stories across Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu. Here are seven releases, each explained, so you can pick before the screens fill up. 7 South Films to Watch Week FilmDateLanguageGenreLeadRamayana: Part OneNov 5Hindi, multi-languageMythological epicRanbir KapoorSceneNov 6TamilCrime comedySuriyaMookuthi Amman 2Nov 6Tamil, multi-languageFantasy comedyNayantharaAppa KuttyNov 6TamilAction dramaVijay AntonyDiscoNov 6MalayalamAction crime thrillerAntony Varghese PepeNeekkamNov 6MalayalamPsychological thrillerNot listedHatahNov 6TeluguHorror thrillerKiran Abbavaram 1. Ramayana: Part One (Nov 5) Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part epic is the week’s biggest event, reportedly the most expensive Indian film ever made. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi is Sita, Yash is Ravana, Sunny Deol is Hanuman and Ravi Dubey is Lakshman. It is produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios with eight-time Oscar-winning DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Paid previews run on November 4, and the multi-language release puts it directly in the mix across South markets. Pick it for sheer scale. https://youtu.be/LM4ByXufv2w?si=Jnv9RWdWAN-vfM4g 2. Scene (Nov 6) Suriya plays Inbaraj, an eccentric, laid-back police officer who resigns at the peak of his career, then is forced to reopen an unfinished case with a chaotic team. Jithu Madhavan directs, with Nazriya Nazim and Naslen, who is introduced as the chilling antagonist Eswaran. Pick it for star power with humour. 3.
Mookuthi Amman 2 (Nov 6) Nayanthara returns as the goddess in this sequel to the 2020 hit, directed by Sundar C with music by Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi. The teaser, titled Rise of Mahasakthi, raised expectations, and the film also releases in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. In the first film, the goddess teamed with a news anchor to expose a fraudulent godman, and that faith-meets-fun spirit defines the franchise. Pick it for a festive family outing. 4. Appa Kutty (Nov 6) Vijay Antony stars in this action drama about the bond between a father and his daughter, with Preethi Asrani in the lead alongside him. He also composes the music and edits the film. Directed by Mu Maran, it was pushed from October 16 to the Diwali window. The poster line speaks of a scarred face and a safe shoulder, which sums up the emotional tone. Pick it for tears and action together. https://youtu.be/EzMxyEKB0cg?si=mwS5fkRHHXMrnpcq 5. Disco (Nov 6) This Malayalam action-crime thriller from director Ullas Chemban is set against a retro backdrop. It follows a character’s journey from an ordinary life into the underworld. Antony Varghese Pepe, Chemban Vinod Jose and Arjun Ashokan play pivotal roles.

A mature, mysterious protagonist plays high-risk tactical moves and mind games with law enforcement in an investigation centred around a police station. Pick it if you like cat-and-mouse tension. 7. Hatah (Nov 6) This Telugu psychological horror-thriller from director Anush Gorak stars Kiran Abbavaram and Rahman, with Kushlu Maddala, Thanuja Puttaswamy and Namritha Mv.
