Derby County manager Wayne Rooney believes his team has a small chance of avoiding relegation this season. Rooney has led his men to three consecutive victories, the latest coming against Stoke City by a 2-1 scoreline.
The Rams have been hit with a 21 point deduction after going into administration. As a result, they have been battling relegation from the Championship this season.
What has Wayne Rooney said about Derby County’s season?
‘We have always believed there is a possibility we can stay in this division,’ Rooney said.
‘But we know it is a small chance and we are not getting carried away. However, full praise must go to the players because their commitment this season has been incredible.
‘These three wins now are at the back of our minds and we must give our full attention to Reading on Monday because that is an important game.’
Derby County are currently last in the table following their points deduction. They have ten points from 24 games, and are 11 points from safety. The proposed takeover last year has also been scrapped for the foreseeable future, and has led to the team suffering very heavy blows.
The task for Rooney is a very daunting one, but there is optimism surrounding how they will be able to fight off relegation at the end of the campaign. It would be a remarkable achievement for the former England midfielder if he can help Derby County survive in the Championship against such massive odds this season.
