Warner Bros. Games has reportedly canceled Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition before it was even officially announced. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier first shared the news, having originally written about the project’s existence in June 2024. This expanded edition of 2023’s best-selling game has been developed by Avalanche Software, with the backing of Rocksteady. According to industry insider Tom Henderson, the new edition would be released in 2025 and bring 10–15 hours of additional content at a price of $20–$30 to players who already own the base game.

Warner Bros. Cancels Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition Before Announcement, Sequel Still in Development
Schreier’s new report corroborates these details, reporting that the Definitive Edition would’ve restored a cut story arc involving one of the game’s companions. However, Warner Bros. eventually nixed it, worried that the added content wasn’t worth the cost. Instead of reducing the price, they presumably decided that the project was not worth the cost. The decision is an unfortunate one since it could have served as an opportunity for Avalanche Software and Rocksteady to fix some of the game’s remaining technical hiccups.
Even armed with the latest upgrades and optimizations, Hogwarts Legacy still suffers from stuttering on PC — even on the most bleeding-edge hardware, like the GeForce RTX 5090 with DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation activated. The game has added official mod support in recent months, but it is probably safe to say that the modding community will not adopt official modding for the game like some of the other studios, such as Bethesda, have done with their titles.
However, even with the delay, Hogwarts Legacy has become one of the best-selling games in recent years and has sold over 34 million copies. Additionally, Schreier confirmed that a full-fledged sequel is still in development at Avalanche Software. While Warner Bros. Games has previously expressed interest in expanding the franchise into live-service experiences, Schreier reports that the sequel will not follow this model. Fans can expect a continuation of the single-player RPG experience rather than an online-focused adaptation.
