India-China tension is growing gradually. China attacked the Indian soldiers at the LAC in Galwan Valley in Eastern Ladakh on Monday night. This has caused outrage in the country and the “Boycott Chinese Products” movement is getting louder.

VIVO is the title sponsor of IPL. VIVO is a Chinese technology company owned by BBK Electronics that designs and develops smartphones, smartphone accessories, software and online services.

Ladakh-based engineer Sonam Wangchuk, who was the inspiration behind Aamir Khan’s character in the 2009 film ‘3 Idiots’ was the first to call for the boycott of Chinese products. He had started the slogans: ‘Boycott China’, ‘Boycott Made in China’, ‘Anywhere but China’. Now this voice is growing louder in the whole country after the Indian soldiers were killed by Chinese soldiers in Galwan.

BCCI had signed a 5-year deal in 2018 with VIVO for the title sponsorship of IPL. VIVO pays Rs 440 crores per season. This deal has come under the lens as the whole country has come together under the “Boycott Chinese Products” movement.

Some of the other board sponsors like PayTM (Title Sponsor of Indian Cricket), Dream XI (Associate Sponsor) has Chinese investors on board. Many Indian stars are also brand ambassadors of Chinese products. They have come under scrutiny as well.

BCCI treasurer, Arun Dhumal said the governing body will not consider taking Chinese firms on board in future as national interest comes ahead of everything else. But for now, BCCI will honour its existing deals with its sponsor.

He told Republic TV: “For any future contract, we will keep public sentiment and national interest in mind. BCCI gives full commitment to look into boycotting Chinese product and endorsements in future in the best of the nation. BCCI has given all infrastructure to Indian companies and not Chinese companies.”

“We need to differentiate between Indian and Chinese interest. Whatever money is coming 42 per cent going to Indian Government and the Indian Army. BCCI Contract was signed by the previous regime, but now we have to honour the contract.”

“If the BCCI is making money out of a Chinese company then that money is going to the (Indian) government and Indian money through tax. It is helping Indian cause so we have to see whether Indian money is going to China or Chinese money is coming to India for India’s interest.”

The Telecom Ministry of India has already ordered all telecom companies including BSNL, MTNL, Jio, Airtel and others to ban all Chinese deals and equipment. This is ultimately a smart move from the Indian government to cripple China in the business perspective and ultimately making the country less reliable for cheaper Chinese goods.
