Vivo has the highest share in the Smartphone market for the first three weeks of June 2021 in China

It’s being reported today that China’s smartphone sales rebounded during the mid-year (June 18) shopping festival, rising 7% YoY according to Counterpoint data. The increase came after the world’s biggest smartphone market posted two consecutive monthly YoY declines. However, the market is still left with a mixed picture for the year-end outlook.

vivo took the first spot during the first three weeks of June, making up 23% of the smartphone sales of the top eight OEMs, according to Counterpoint’s smartphone tracker. The second and third spots went to OPPO (21%) and Xiaomi (19%).

Apple is seeing a growth in the sale of its smartphones in China. The sales of the iPhone reportedly increased by 16 percent during the festival shopping season in the country. As a result, the iPhone maker was able to capture 14 percent of the smartphone market in China during the first three weeks of June.

Apple is expected to unveil the next-generation flagship iPhones in September this year. The new models are expected to pack larger batteries, new display technology, slightly refreshed camera modules, and faster chips. The most exciting addition will be the expected 120Hz high refresh rate displays.

Counterpoint notes that present sales numbers were made possible due to the absence of Huawei and its once bubbling Honor sub-brand. The two companies were the first and second bestsellers in 2020 but this year has been different as their sales plummeted 68% and 49% respectively. Huawei’s smartphone business has almost been crippled by the US ban while it has been forced to sell the Honor brand. The brand is yet to pick up under a new owner. The brand managed to record a 7% share during 618 but its sales surged more than 15% compared to the corresponding period in May.

While June was a positive month, the quarter overall was down. Counterpoint didn’t provide smartphone stats for April and May and so we’re blind as to what Apple’s Quarter in China will end up being. Apple’s CEO may provide us with more light on this during his opening statement covering Fiscal Q3-21 on July 27th.
