## A Poster With a Meaning

Marvel shared the artwork with a line Jim speaks to Vision in Episode 7, about standing in the fire of himself and letting it consume him. The image echoes the painting of a burning man seen in Vision’s Mindspace in Episode 2, and a similar piece appeared as concept art at Disney’s D23 Expo. It’s a tragic, beautiful image that suits his story.

## Who Is the Human Torch?

Jim predates the Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm by more than two decades. He debuted in 1939, when Marvel was still Timely Comics, sharing that first issue with Namor. In the comics, scientist Phineas T. Horton built him as a synthetic man whose body bursts into flames on contact with oxygen. Jim learned to control it and fought in World War II as part of the Invaders.

His connection to Vision runs deep. Later comic stories revealed that his remains became the foundation of [Vision’s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vision_(Marvel_Comics)) body. The MCU planted a seed years ago, too: his suit sat in a glass case at the 1943 Stark Expo in *Captain America: The First Avenger*, labeled “Synthetic Man.”

## His Role in VisionQuest

The show established Jim as the framework behind every sentient AI in the MCU, including JARVIS, Vision and Ultron. Episode 7 told his story in full. Horton, grieving his lost son, built a being incapable of pain, yet Jim wanted to feel everything. Love and tragedy followed, and the confrontation killed both creator and creation.

In the present, Vision dove into his own source code to save Lisa Molinari and found Jim and Horton locked in an endless argument. Jim forced Vision to face his grief, helping him reclaim his classic form and handing over the missing code. The victory cost Vision dearly, as he surrendered to the mysterious Client.

## The Client Twist

The episode ended with a shock: the Client wears James Spader’s face, the human form Ultron uses. The twist suggests fans were deliberately misled about Jim being the Client, though the Client does appear to be a Horton descendant. Answers are due on November 10.
