Vodafone Idea (Vi), India’s third-largest telecom provider, has launched 5G services for its prepaid and postpaid users. The service is currently limited to cities such as Mumbai, but the company is planning to scale it to other cities soon. Vi will offer unlimited 5G data to customers who have signed up for any of its postpaid plans in the 5G coverage area, the company said on its website. All this is a big advantage for Vi’s postpaid customers.

Vi Launches Cheapest Unlimited 5G Data Plans: Starts at ₹299 for Prepaid, ₹451 for Postpaid with Nationwide Expansion

However, Vi has yet to reveal which plans will have access to 5G for prepaid users. Currently, the top ₹299 prepaid recharge seems to be providing unlimited 5G data, according to the observations made by TelecomTalk community member Shivraj Roy. While Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio demand users to top-up with the 2GB daily data plans in order to access the 5G services, Vi will not determine clear terms for prepaid customers yet. The way Vi will structure its prepaid 5G plans will be worth watching.

As for now, the only thing we know for sure is that all plans starting with ₹451 for Vi postpaid users will get unlimited access to 5G. There is no official information that states the availability of Vi on prepaid packages above ₹299. Vi had announced plans to start rolling out its 5G network in Mumbai, and reportedly, some consumers are already receiving 5G network access. Apart from Mumbai, Vi has also revealed that it will launch its 5G services in other cities including Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Patna, 5G services will start from April 2025.

Vi is deploying 5G NSA (non-standalone architecture) in these cities, which means it will rely on its existing 4G network infrastructure for 5G connectivity. This approach allows for a smoother transition to 5G while maintaining stability in network performance. As the expansion progresses, more details about Vi’s 5G plans and availability for prepaid users are expected to emerge.
