Virat Kohli's Cover Drive

Virat Kohli’s cover drive, arguably one of the most aesthetic shots in cricket has been both a hallmark of his batting brilliance and, at times, his Achilles’ heel. From his struggles in England in 2014 to his peak performances in 2018 and his recent challenges on the Australia tour in 2024-25, Kohli’s technique has undergone notable transformations. But what has really changed in his cover drive technique over the years?

Virat Kohli:Virat Kohli’s Cover Drive Evolution – What Changed Since 2014?

2014 England Tour: The Struggle Begins

The England tour of 2014 was a nightmare for Kohli. His off stump struggles were glaring, as James Anderson and the English seamers exploited his technique to perfection. Kohli’s across the crease stance and a tendency for his head to fall outside the off-stump left him vulnerable to deliveries in the channel.

He often went fishing for balls he could have left, resulting in a string of dismissals behind the stumps. His cover drive, which he attempted with little control or judgment, became his undoing. Kohli finished the series with a paltry 134 runs in 10 innings, averaging a meager 13.40.

2018 England Tour: A Redemption Masterclass

Four years later, Kohli returned to England as a completely transformed batter. Determined to overcome his off stump woes, he made crucial adjustments:

Just Watch all the balls of Virat Kohli dismissals.

All are way out of off stump. That's simply Stupid Stupid Stupid gameplay from Kohli.

Why can't he resist himself from playing Cover Drive🤔#ViratKohli #INDvsAUS #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/nkkzQUo4ws

  • Wider and Open Stance: Kohli adopted a more open stance, aligning his head with the line of the off-stump.
  • Enhanced Footwork: His improved foot movement allowed him to judge deliveries better, playing closer to his body.
  • Selective Cover Drives: Kohli displayed exceptional discipline, reserving his cover drives for only those deliveries in his comfort zone.

These changes paid off spectacularly. Kohli amassed 593 runs in 10 innings, averaging 59.30, and emerged as the highest run scorer of the series. His cover drive, when deployed, was once again a joy to watch, earning admiration across the cricketing world.

IRFAN PATHAN SAID:

"VIRAT KOHLI ONLY RELIES ON LIMITED SHOTS LIKE FRONT FOOT AND COVER IN THE OFF SIDE. LIKE SACHIN TENDULKAR PAAJI, IF HE DID NOT PLAY COVER DRIVE THEN HE HAS CUT SHOT, SQUARE CUT AND UPPER CUT. IT'S NOT LIKE VIRAT DOES NOT HAVE THESE SHOTS BUT HE NEITHER USES… pic.twitter.com/JDCanr75Hb

The 2022 Adjustment: A Step Backward?

By 2022, Kohli altered his stance yet again. This time, he opened up slightly more, with his head shifting towards the leg stump line. The adjustment, however, didn’t yield the desired results. He struggled with consistency and scored at an average of just 26.50 across 11 innings that year.

2024-25 Australia Tour: Another Chapter of Struggles

On India’s 2024-25 tour of Australia, Kohli’s form once again came under scrutiny. Known for his previous successes Down Under, fans expected him to shine. However, Kohli managed just 190 runs in five matches, averaging 23.75, a sharp contrast to his career average in Australia.

Irfan Pathan said – "Virat Kohli only relies on limited shots like front foot and cover in the off side. Like Sachin Tendulkar paaji, if he did not play cover drive then he has cut shot, square cut and upper cut. It's not like Virat does not have these shots but he neither uses… pic.twitter.com/t1G18KTNqK

This time, Kohli took a middle-stump guard and stood further outside the crease to negate swing. But this adjustment backfired. His cover drive, instead of being a weapon, became a liability. Kohli’s eagerness to play the drive led to repeated dismissals outside the off-stump, reminiscent of his 2014 England struggles.

What’s Next for Kohli’s Cover Drive?

The recurring pattern of dismissals outside the off-stump raises questions about Kohli’s technique and mental approach. As he gears up for the upcoming England tour, fans are eager to see if Kohli can once again reinvent himself, much like he did in 2018.

Here’s what Kohli might focus on:

  1. Greater Discipline: Exercising caution with the cover drive and choosing deliveries wisely.
  2. Back to Basics: Revisiting his 2018 adjustments, including a wider stance and head alignment with the off-stump.
  3. Mental Resilience: Kohli’s success in 2018 was as much about technique as it was about mental strength. He’ll need to channel that same determination.

The Legacy of Kohli’s Cover Drive

I have never seen a player making same mistake, but Virat Kohli is the only player, who got out for atleast 50+ times to play his favourite shot (cover drive) 🤐

Kohli’s cover drive has enthralled fans for over a decade, but it has also been a double edged sword. Whether he can master it once again and silence his critics remains to be seen. For now, the cricketing world waits with bated breath for the champion batter to script yet another redemption story.
