A viral video has sparked widespread outrage after it captured a shocking incident in a Bengaluru residential complex where a woman, Simi Nair, was seen deliberately destroying a Pookalam – a traditional floral arrangement made to celebrate the festival of Onam.
The video shows Nair engaging in a heated argument with the residents of the Monarch Serenity Apartment Complex, questioning why the Pookalam was placed in the common area instead of inside individual apartments. Despite being told that the lobby is a shared space, Nair callously stepped on and destroyed the intricate flower arrangement with her feet.
The video, shared widely on social media, has drawn sharp criticism. The post accompanying the video read, “This was truly shameless behavior! Simi Nair, a resident of Monarch Serenity, deliberately destroyed a Pookalam created by children in the common area to celebrate Onam. This act not only disrespected the children’s efforts but also undermined the sense of community that festivals like Onam are meant to foster.”
What is Pookalam?
A Pookalam is a beautiful and intricate floral design laid on the ground during Onam, a major festival in Kerala, India. It symbolizes joy and community, with its name derived from two words: “Poov” (flower) and “Kalam” (colored sketch). It is a central part of the ten-day Onam celebrations, bringing families and neighbors together.

The video has sparked outrage, with many condemning Nair’s actions. One user wrote, “This behavior must not be tolerated. Onam is about joy and flowers; one can easily admire the decoration without destroying it. Her actions are disgraceful.” Another commented, “How could she destroy the happiness of others? This was an act of pure malice.”
A third comment echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Her mentality is wicked and intolerant. Respect for traditions and cultures is essential, and this act showed none of that.”
This incident has raised concerns about respect for cultural traditions and community spirit, with many calling for action to be taken against such intolerant behavior.
