Vinicius Jr is set to win the award for the best player in LaLiga during the 22/23 season at the AFE Gala. The award was voted upon by fellow players, and will see the Brazilian recognised for his efforts last season.

He made 33 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists as they finished behind eventual champions and arch-rivals Barcelona.

Although Vinicius Jr had a remarkable season in both the league and all other competitions, there are other players who perhaps had a better claim to the award.

In particular, Antoine Griezmann stands out as one of the players who could have been given the award. The Frenchman almost single-handedly turned things around for Atletico Madrid, scoring 15 goals and providing 17 assists in 38 games whilst maintaining a tireless work rate.

Robert Lewandowski won the Pichichi Trophy in his very first season to help Barcelona win the LaLiga title, while Marc Andre ter Stegen had a historic campaign between the sticks. However, both have been beaten to the award by Real Madrid’s new number 7.

Vinicius was recently given the Socrates Award for contributions to football off the pitch. The Brazilian has been one of the loudest voices in the fight against racism and has helped improve education in Brazil, which helped him earn the award at the Ballon d’or ceremony.
