Villarreal thrash Juventus 3-0 to knock them out of the Champions League

Juventus’ hopes for a Champions League run this season have been put to rest after Villarreal mounted a late onslaught to eliminate them. The La Liga club won the second leg in Turin 3-0 to seal their spot in the last eight of the competition.

Although the home team had the upper hand for the majority of the second leg, everything changed when they conceded a penalty in the 78th minute. Gerard Moreno came off the bench to score the opener in the second leg, and would quickly be followed by Pau Torres onto the scoresheet.

Arnaut Danjuma would score the second penalty that Juventus conceded in the final stages of the game. And as a result, they picked up a 4-1 win on aggregate over the Serie A club.

Juventus collapse out of the Champions League against Villarreal

Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini were both out of the starting eleven for the game, and Max Allegri opted for a 3-man backline for Juventus. Dusan Vlahovic and Alvaro Morata partnered up in attack, but were unable to score a single goal in the second leg of the game.

With Vlahovic silenced for the second leg, Pau Torres was able to get a goal for himself to help his team into the next round.

Juventus’ hopes for a trophy this season are now hanging onto the Coppa Italia, with them being seven points behind current Serie A leaders AC Milan. On the other hand, Villarreal’s opponents for the quarter finals will be revealed in the Champions League draw on Friday.
