Villarreal beats Manchester United to win the UEFA Europa League trophy. It was the first trophy for the Spanish side in 16 years.

The game ended in 1-1 score after full 90 minutes and 30 minutes of Extra-Time. Villarreal broke the deadlock at the 29th minute as Gerard Moreno scored for the Spanish side.

But Manchester United continued to find the equalizer. In the second half, Edinson Cavani equalized for Manchester United at the 55th minute. The Red Devils continued to put pressure on Villarreal but failed to find the net. The match went onto a tie-breaker.

Total 22 penalties have been taken to separate the two sides. All the 10 players scored from the spot and it was all down to both goalkeepers to decide the tie. Villarreal goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli scored from the spot. But Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea’s shot was saved and the match ended as Villarreal won the match with an 11-10 scoreline in the penalty shoot-out.

With this defeat, Manchester United remained trophyless for another season. It was their 4th season in a row that ended without a silverware. It will surely be a major talking point for a club like Manchester United.

However, Villarreal won their first trophy in 16 years and also qualified for the next year’s UEFA Champions League. It is surely a great achievement for Unai Emery’s side.
