Underrated or Underappreciated? Viktor Gyökeres’ Debut Season Deserves More Respect

When Viktor Gyokeres arrived at Arsenal in the summer for £55 million, the expectation was immediate and uncomplicated: goals. Lots of them. The kind that would provide the final ingredient to push Mikel Arteta’s side over the line in the Premier League title race.

For the first months of the campaign, those goals were slow to arrive. The criticism came quickly and loudly. But with 21 goals in all competitions this season — and 14 of those arriving since the turn of the year — the question is now whether the initial verdict was fair, or whether his critics moved too fast.

The Case for the Critics: Judging a Striker Too Soon

The criticism of Viktor Gyokeres has not been entirely without foundation. He scored just three times in his first 11 competitive appearances for Arsenal, and endured another lean patch between late November and the start of the new year that yielded only one goal in 10 games.

At times, he has looked isolated — struggling to link play as effectively as someone like Kai Havertz, and Arsenal’s forward line has occasionally lacked cohesion with him leading it. The early months of his Gunners career were punctuated by moments of frustration and disconnection from the system around him.

But context matters. And the context of what Gyokeres has produced over the full course of this season changes the picture significantly.

The Numbers That Reframe Everything

Viktor Gyokeres scored twice and registered an assist as Arsenal dismantled Fulham 3-0 at the Emirates on Saturday, reaching 21 goals in all competitions for the season. His opener — a close-range tap-in following excellent work from Bukayo Saka down the right — was his 20th. A header on the stroke of half-time was his 21st.

Since the start of 2026, Gyokeres has scored 14 goals in all competitions — more than any other Premier League player over that period. Across Europe’s top five leagues in the same timeframe, only three players have scored more.

That is not the company of a striker who has failed to deliver. That is elite production.

Historic Context: What 21 Goals in a Debut Season Means for Arsenal

Perhaps the most striking dimension of Gyokeres’ season is how rare his achievement is in Arsenal’s history.

He is the first player to score 20 or more goals in all competitions in his debut season at Arsenal since Alexis Sánchez in 2014-15 (25 goals). Before Sánchez, only Thierry Henry managed it in the Premier League era — scoring 26 in his debut campaign of 1999-2000. Before Henry, Ian Wright was the last, scoring 26 in 1991-92.

Across the club’s entire history, Gyokeres is only the 13th player to score 20 or more in their debut Arsenal season.

The name conspicuously absent from that list? Robin van Persie — one of the most celebrated strikers in Arsenal’s modern history and one of the deadliest finishers the Premier League has seen. Van Persie scored just nine goals in his debut season in 2004-05. Gyokeres has scored more than twice as many.

The Penalty Debate: A Fair Criticism?

One line of critique that has followed Gyokeres throughout his Arsenal career is that a disproportionate share of his goals have come from the penalty spot. Three of his 14 Premier League goals this season have been penalties — 21.4% of his league total.

But perspective is required here.

Gyokeres’ penalty conversion rate sits well within a normal range for elite forwards. Harry Kane converts 30% of his goals from the spot this season. Mbappé is at 29%. Good finishers score penalties — and being reliable from twelve yards is a valuable quality in itself.

Gyokeres demonstrated precisely that quality in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atlético Madrid, converting from the spot to register his 27th consecutive successfully converted penalty. That does not suggest a player who gets lucky. That suggests a player with the technical precision and mental strength to deliver in the highest-pressure moments.

More Than Just Goals

Viktor Gyokeres was signed not purely for his goal-scoring record — though that was evidently central to Arsenal’s decision — but for what he offers as a complete centre-forward. His powerful running in behind opposition defences was on clear display against Fulham, with sharp movement into the channels complementing refined hold-up play in the build-up to Saka’s goal.

That profile — a striker who creates space for others while also finishing clinically — is what Arteta identified at Sporting CP and what he has gradually developed at Arsenal. The earlier criticism that he struggled to link play as effectively as Havertz may have had some validity in the autumn. By spring, the integration is noticeably smoother.

Those 21 goals have helped Arsenal establish a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League. How many more he can add across the remaining three games may well determine where the trophy ends up.
