Director Shankar doesn’t show up at film launches out of social obligation. So when he attended the pooja ceremony of Dhanush’s upcoming project **D55** in person, Tamil cinema insiders took notice — and the conversation quickly turned to **Velpari**, Shankar’s long-gestating magnum opus that has been searching for its lead ever since Ranveer Singh and Chiyaan Vikram were linked to it.

## The D55 Pooja Clue That Set Off Rumours

Here’s the detail that sparked everything. According to a report by Valai Pechu, Shankar is reportedly considering Dhanush for a **pivotal role** in Velpari — and the reason he was believed to have attended the D55 pooja in person was specifically to check on the actor’s availability. No official word from either camp yet, but in Tamil cinema, showing up at someone’s launch ceremony carries weight.

It’s worth noting this follows a trail of high-profile stars being circled for the project. Ranveer Singh’s name had been attached earlier, as had Chiyaan Vikram’s — though neither materialised into a confirmed deal. Dhanush would bring a different energy entirely: rooted in Tamil soil, carrying both critical acclaim and mass appeal, and at a stage in his career where a Shankar collaboration would be genuinely historic.

## What Is Velpari About?

The film is an adaptation of Su Venkatesan’s celebrated Tamil novel *Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Pari*. According to [Wikipedia’s page on S. Shankar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shankar_(director)), the director has consistently mounted large-scale, socially layered narratives — making an ancient saga about a tribal king defying three great empires a natural fit for his visual storytelling instincts. Shankar himself has compared the project’s ambition to global blockbusters in scale.

## Dhanush’s Packed Lineup Before Velpari Can Happen

Even if talks are real, Dhanush isn’t exactly sitting idle. His immediate calendar includes **Kara** (directed by Vignesh Raja of *Por Thozhil* fame, co-starring Mamitha Baiju, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Jayaram — slated for summer 2026) and **D55** (directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, produced by Dhanush himself, featuring Mammootty, Sreeleela, and Sai Pallavi). Any Velpari involvement would realistically come after these commitments are wrapped.
