Raphael Varane is one of the most important players for Real Madrid right now. The French international’s presence as part of the backline is only magnified by the absence of Sergio Ramos from the starting lineup due to injury.
The defender only has one year left on his current deal with Real Madrid, and could be on the verge of moving on. Clubs from England in particular are looking out for a player of his stature, and Madrid could be forced to sell him unless they agree a contract agreement with him in the summer.
The player will otherwise have to walk out on a free transfer next year, and will be eligible to join whichever club he chooses without it concerning Madrid at all. Florentino Perez has come out and left the door wide open for the Frenchman’s departure, saying:
“Varane? I’m happy with our team… if players don’t want to stay at Madrid they can leave.”
Manchester United in particular are keen on landing the 2018 World Cup winner to help solidify the backline and find a suitable partner for club captain Harry Maguire. Chelsea are also reportedly in the race for a centre-back, but have a plethora of options to choose from already.
Varane currently has no agreement in place with Madrid regarding an extension, and with Sergio Ramos’ contract situation already up in the air, Madrid could have a real headache on their hands concerning their players’ contracts this summer.
