After getting approval from the National Payments Corporation of India, WhatsApp Pay began offering UPI payments services in India, which is its largest market with over 400 million users (NPCI).

It is currently partnered with five Indian banks – ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank – and users can send money to anyone using a UPI-enabled app via WhatsApp.
It is necessary to have a bank account and a debit card in India to send money using WhatsApp in the country. The Facebook-owned messaging app will transmit instructions to banks, also known as payment service providers, to begin a UPI money transfer between the sender and receiver bank accounts.
WhatsApp users can now send money to anyone who uses a UPI-enabled app.
When utilising WhatsApp to make payments, each transaction requires a unique UPI PIN.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to using WhatsApp Pay to enable, transfer, or receive money:
- On your smartphone, open the WhatsApp app and click the three-dotted icon in the top right corner.
- Go to ‘Payments,’ then to ‘Add payment method.’
- The screen will display a list of bank names.
- Once you’ve chosen your bank, you’ll be asked to verify your bank-linked cell phone number.
- A user must choose ‘Verify’ by SMS in order to be verified.
Note: The WhatsApp number must match the one associated with your bank account.
- After the verification process is completed, the user must finish the payment setup process.
- Similar to other apps, a UPI pin is required for doing transactions on WhatsApp.
- On the payments page, you’ll be able to see the bank you selected.
If the user want to transfer or receive money, the following steps must be followed:
- Select the ‘attachment’ icon from any chat on WhatsApp.
- To send money to someone, go to ‘Payment’ and enter the amount you’d want to send. A note can be added by the user as well.
- You must input your UPI PIN in order to complete the payment procedure on WhatsApp.
- A confirmation message will appear after you’ve completed your transaction.
Users using the latest versions of the iPhone and Android apps can now make payments on WhatsApp.
