Ukraine 2-1 Sweden: Round of 16 ends with late extra-time win for Ukraine

Ukraine are the last team to make it to the quarter-finals of the Euros, beating Sweden 2-1 in their round of 16 encounters after extra time to progress.

Manchester City player Oleksandr Zinchenko opened the scoring for the victors shortly before the half-hour mark. The midfielder launched an unstoppable low volley at goal, and Robin Olsen could not stop it from going in despite getting a hand to it.

Sweden’s best player in this tournament, Emil Forsberg, took a shot at goal from well outside the box two minutes before halftime, and the low ball took a massive deflection, rising after hitting the ground to beat Bushchan at the Ukrainian goal and draw things level between both teams.

The second half saw Serhiy Sydorchuk of Ukraine hit the post, following two attempts by Forsberg hitting the post and crossbar, respectively. Several chances were created for both teams, but good saves from both goalkeepers and a stroke of luck pushed the game into extra time.

Marcus Danielsson was sent off in the 99th minute for a follow-up challenge by VAR, and Sweden had to endure the final stages of the game with 10 men. Ukraine capitalised on their depleted opposition, as Artem Dovbyk headed in a cross from Zinchenko at the 120th minute to win the game for his country.

Ukraine will head into the quarter-finals as the underdogs against England, who won against Germany earlier last night.
