Udanta Singh Replaces Injured Brandon Fernandes in Indian Squad Ahead of Bangladesh Clash

The Indian football team has suffered a setback ahead of their crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Bangladesh in Shillong on March 25. Playmaker Brandon Fernandes has been ruled out due to an injury sustained during India’s recent 3-0 victory over the Maldives in an international friendly. Winger Udanta Singh has been called up as his replacement.

Brandon Fernandes

Fernandes’ injury occurred late in the first half when he slipped on the turf and had to be stretchered off the field. Confirming the development, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) released a statement: “Brandon Fernandes has been released from the Indian squad due to an injury he picked up in the match against Maldives. Udanta Singh has joined the Indian camp in Shillong.”

Coach Manolo Marquez Confirms Absence of Fernandes

Following India’s dominant performance against the Maldives, head coach Manolo Marquez confirmed that Fernandes would not recover in time for the Bangladesh fixture. His absence is a major blow to India’s midfield, given his ability to dictate the tempo and provide creative spark in the attacking third.

Manolo Marquez

India are already dealing with the absence of key attackers Manvir Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte, both sidelined with injuries. However, the return of veteran forward Sunil Chhetri has provided a significant morale boost. Chhetri, who reversed his international retirement decision, marked his comeback in style by scoring his 95th international goal against the Maldives.

Udanta Singh’s Inclusion: A Tactical Shift?

Udanta Singh, known for his blistering pace and ability to stretch defenses, will add a different dimension to India’s attack. Unlike Fernandes, who operates as a deep-lying playmaker, Udanta is more suited to a wide attacking role. His inclusion could signal a shift in Marquez’s tactical setup, potentially favoring a more direct and counter-attacking approach.

Although Udanta has not been a regular feature in the national squad recently, his experience at the highest level, including his performances in the Indian Super League (ISL), makes him a reliable option. With his ability to deliver precise crosses and exploit spaces behind defenders, he could be an asset against Bangladesh’s backline.

Mahesh Singh: A Potential Alternative in Midfield

Another player who could step up in Fernandes’ absence is Mahesh Singh. The dynamic midfielder was impressive against the Maldives, consistently troubling their defense with his movement and dribbling ability. His versatility allows him to play in multiple positions, making him a potential replacement in the central attacking role.

Mahesh Naorem Singh

Despite an inconsistent ISL season with East Bengal, Mahesh has shown flashes of brilliance. His ability to create scoring opportunities and take on defenders one-on-one makes him a valuable option. He also offers a defensive work rate, which could help India maintain balance in midfield.

Mahesh’s proficiency in set-pieces, while not at Fernandes’ level, could still pose a threat to opponents. His numbers this season include 20 ISL appearances, 1,280 minutes played, two goals, and one assist. Although his finishing has been a concern, his creativity and work ethic could provide an alternative to Marquez’s plans.

India’s Qualification Hopes Hang in Balance

The upcoming match against Bangladesh is crucial for India’s qualification campaign. Placed in Group C alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Singapore, only the top team will secure an automatic spot in the 2027 Asian Cup. Given the competitive nature of the group, every point will be vital.

With injuries affecting key personnel, India’s depth will be tested. The onus will be on Chhetri to lead from the front, while Udanta and Mahesh will need to step up in the absence of Fernandes. Marquez will have to find the right tactical balance to ensure India maintains momentum in the qualifiers.
