PSG vs Inter: Preview

All eyes will turn to the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan clash for European supremacy in the UEFA Champions League final.

Champions league

Both sides are seeking redemption after recent heartbreaks on this stage—PSG fell to Bayern Munich in 2020, while Inter came up short against Manchester City in the 2023 final.

While many fans had hoped for a high-octane PSG vs Barcelona showdown, this matchup still promises plenty of fireworks, especially after Inter’s thrilling semi-final performance against Hansi Flick’s side.

PSG have arguably been the standout team in Europe this season. Under Luis Enrique, they are chasing a historic treble, having already secured the Ligue 1 title and lifted the Coupe de France last weekend.

Among clubs in Europe’s top five leagues, only Barcelona (174) have netted more goals across all competitions than PSG (147). In terms of expected goals (xG), only the Blaugrana edge them out in the 2024-25 season, with 145.3 to PSG’s 142.5.

Paris Saint-Germain have been a dominant force statistically in this season’s UEFA Champions League, leading all teams in total shots (1,074), shots on target (450), and big chances created (280). Only Manchester City (2,239) have had more touches in the opposition’s penalty area than PSG (2,207), underscoring the Parisians’ attacking prowess.

Champions league 2025 26

Luis Enrique, who famously lifted the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2015, is now on the brink of joining an elite group of managers to have won the competition with two different clubs. That list includes managerial greats like Carlo Ancelotti (Milan and Real Madrid), Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich), Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid and Bayern), José Mourinho (Porto and Inter), and Pep Guardiola (Barcelona and Manchester City).

Remarkably, Enrique’s 2015 triumph also formed part of a treble-winning campaign. Should PSG clinch the title on Saturday, he would become only the second manager—after Guardiola—to win a treble consisting of the Champions League, a domestic cup, and a league title with two different clubs.

There’s a hint of poetic symmetry too: Enrique’s Barcelona beat Juventus, an Italian side, in the 2015 final—a detail that could be seen as a positive omen ahead of PSG’s clash with Inter.

This season has been PSG’s most successful in terms of both matches won (10) and goals scored (33) in a single major European campaign. While the revamped format has added more fixtures—including a two-legged knockout play-off against Brest after a turbulent league phase—PSG have still managed to shine. They’re also averaging a club-best 18.6 shots per game in the Champions League since Opta began collecting such data in 2003-04.

However, as their dramatic semi-final triumph over Barcelona showed, Inter Milan are far from easy opponents.

Inter

While Simone Inzaghi opted for a more open and attacking approach across the two legs against the La Liga giants, Inter’s Champions League campaign has largely been built on a rock-solid defensive foundation. They’ve kept a tournament-best eight clean sheets and have conceded just 11 goals—one of which was an own goal—with more than half (six) of those coming during the semi-final clash.

A key figure in that defensive resilience has been goalkeeper Yann Sommer. The Swiss veteran has been outstanding between the posts, leading the competition in clean sheets (seven) and ranking third for total saves (48), behind only Thibaut Courtois (52) and Emiliano Martínez (49).

Yann sommer

Sommer’s impact becomes even clearer when analyzing expected goals on target (xGOT). He has prevented more goals than any other shot-stopper in the tournament, with a +5.9 goals prevented rate—having conceded just 10 from 15.9 xGOT (excluding own goals).

Despite allowing a competition-high 214 shots, Inter have been adept at restricting their opponents to low-quality chances. Their expected goals against (xGA) sits at 17.3, and the average xG per shot faced is just 0.08, highlighting the disciplined structure of their defense.

In short, Inter’s blend of tactical solidity and goalkeeping excellence makes them a formidable obstacle in PSG’s path to glory.

Veteran defender Francesco Acerbi has been just as pivotal as goalkeeper Yann Sommer in Inter’s campaign.

Acerbi, who netted Inter’s vital late equaliser in the semi-final clash against Barcelona, is poised to become the fourth-oldest outfield player to start a Champions League final at 37 years and 110 days. Only Paolo Maldini (38 years, 331 days for Milan in 2007), Lothar Matthäus (38 years, 66 days for Bayern in 1999), and Ryan Giggs (37 years, 180 days for Manchester United in 2011) were older.

On the opposite flank, dynamic wing-back Denzel Dumfries was a standout performer, directly contributing to five goals over both semi-final legs against Barcelona (two goals and three assists)—matching his total goal involvements from his previous 51 European appearances.

Manager Simone Inzaghi has leaned heavily on experience. This season, only Atlético Madrid (43.5%) have allocated a greater share of Champions League minutes to players aged 30 or older than Inter (43.3%). Inter’s veterans have collectively played 6,151 minutes—more than any side since Juventus’ 6,186 minutes in the 2016–17 campaign. Notably, all 1,350 of Paris Saint-Germain’s minutes by players over 30 have come from a single player: Marquinhos.

And that experience has clearly paid off. Inter have trailed in just 1.2% of their Champions League minutes this season—falling behind in only three matches and never for more than 370 seconds. The longest they’ve been behind was 370 seconds against Bayern, followed by 343 against Barcelona and 285 against Bayer Leverkusen. They’ve also led for 50.8% of their total game time—the highest in the competition.

Inter vs barcelona

It hasn’t all been about tough defending and grinding out results for Inter.

They’ve found the back of the net 26 times this Champions League season—matching their joint highest tally in a major European campaign, which they also achieved in 2002-03.

Remarkably, Inter have scored two or more goals in each of their six knockout matches, putting them on course to become only the third team ever to net multiple goals in every knockout round, including the final. The only other clubs to do this were Real Madrid in 1959-60 (seven games) and Milan in 1993-94 (two games).

Two of Europe’s hottest forwards are set to battle for the spotlight.

Ousmane Dembélé has enjoyed a sensational campaign, contributing directly to 12 Champions League goals this season—eight goals and four assists—the most by any PSG player in a single edition. Only Zlatan Ibrahimović in 2013-14 (10 goals) has scored more for PSG in one campaign.

On the other side, Lautaro Martínez has found the net in the round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals. Only five players have scored at these stages plus the final in the same season—Frank Lampard (2007-08), Diego Milito (2009-10), Lionel Messi (2010-11), Cristiano Ronaldo (2013-14), and Sadio Mané (2017-18).

The Argentine striker is also on the brink of a personal milestone, aiming to become the first Inter player to score 10 goals in a major European campaign, needing just one more goal to reach that mark.

Lautaro martínez

This will mark only the second European Cup/Champions League final featuring an Italian team (Inter) against a French side (PSG), the first being when Marseille defeated Milan 1-0 in 1993. That victory remains the only time a French club has lifted the trophy. Interestingly, that final was also played in Munich.

In fact, this will be the fifth time Munich hosts a European Cup/Champions League final. In each of the previous four finals held there, the winning team claimed the trophy for the very first time—Nottingham Forest in 1979, Marseille in 1993, Dortmund in 1997, and Chelsea in 2012. PSG will be aiming to join that exclusive list.

However, French clubs have a mixed record on the big stage, having won just two out of their 15 major European finals overall.

PSG vs Inter: Head-to-Head

When it comes to pedigree in European finals, Inter, who secured second place in Serie A this season, hold a significant advantage.

This marks Inter’s seventh time reaching the European Cup/Champions League final, with three previous triumphs (1964, 1965, and 2010). Their most recent final saw them narrowly lose 1-0 to Manchester City in 2023, a campaign that completed Guardiola’s treble.

PSG, by contrast, are making only their second appearance at this stage. They last lifted a major European trophy by winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995-96, a feat unmatched by any other French club since.

Champions league 2025 26

Notably, PSG rank fourth for the most European Cup/Champions League matches played without securing the title, having featured in 167 games. Only Arsenal (211), Dynamo Kyiv (185), and Atlético Madrid (176) have more. Should PSG prevail here, they would set a new record for the most matches played before clinching their first trophy, surpassing Manchester City, who won in their 117th game in 2023.

Interestingly, despite their histories, Inter and PSG have never faced each other competitively before this final. This match also marks the inaugural Champions League clash between coaches Luis Enrique and Simone Inzaghi.

Both managers have led their teams through 32 Champions League fixtures, with Luis Enrique boasting 20 victories and Inzaghi 17.

Finally, this is only the second time a French and Italian team have met in a European Cup/Champions League final—the first being Marseille’s 1-0 win over Milan in 1993, which was also hosted in Munich’s Olympiastadion.

PSG vs Inter: Team News and Predicted Lineup

PSG – Team News

Paris Saint-Germain face a key selection dilemma for the Champions League final: whether to start Bradley Barcola or Desire Doue on the right side of their attack.

Luis Enrique must decide who will join Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the forward line against Inter Milan.

Last weekend in the French Cup final, both Barcola and Doue featured, while Kvaratskhelia remained on the bench as PSG secured a 3-0 victory over Reims.

Barcola contributed two goals and an assist in that match, whereas Doue provided two assists, making Enrique’s choice especially challenging.

Doue was preferred for the first leg of the semi-final against Arsenal, and both players started the second leg when Dembele was dealing with an injury.

Psg predicted lineup vs inter

Though Kvaratskhelia has been managing a minor fitness concern, he is expected to start on the left wing in Munich, with Dembele leading the attack.

Gianluigi Donnarumma will reclaim the goalkeeper position after Matvey Safonov featured in the French Cup final.

Donnarumma has been a standout performer throughout PSG’s Champions League campaign, delivering crucial saves in key victories over Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal.

The usual PSG defensive line of Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, and Nuno Mendes will protect the goal, supported by a midfield duo of Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz.

A notable matchup to watch will be left-back Nuno Mendes against Inter’s right-back Denzel Dumfries, with both full-backs ranking among the Champions League’s top performers this season.

PSG – Predicted Lineup (4-3-3)

  • Goalkeeper: Donnarumma
  • Defenders: Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes
  • Midfielders: João Neves, Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz
  • Forwards: Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Doue

Inter – Team News

Inter Milan have opted for caution ahead of the Champions League final, with Simone Inzaghi resting nearly all his key players during the final Serie A match last weekend.

Only Yann Sommer, Federico Dimarco, and Hakan Calhanoglu featured against Como and are expected to keep their spots against Paris Saint-Germain.

Although sidelined since the semi-final victory over Barcelona due to a hamstring issue, Lautaro Martinez is set to lead the attack in Munich.

Martinez admitted he was not at full strength during that crucial win, and Inzaghi has been carefully managing his recovery in preparation for the final.

Inter predicted lineup vs psg

Benjamin Pavard and Yann Bisseck have both been dealing with minor knocks but are hopeful to be available, leaving Inzaghi with a choice for the right spot in his three-man defense alongside Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni.

Denzel Dumfries, one of the standout performers in this season’s Champions League, will operate as right wing-back, while Dimarco will cover the opposite side.

In midfield, Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicola Barella are set to start, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Davide Frattesi competing for the final central midfield position.

Frattesi netted the decisive goal in extra time against Barcelona, but Inzaghi may favor the seasoned presence of Mkhitaryan.

Marcus Thuram will join Martinez up front to spearhead Inter’s attack.

Inter – Predicted Lineup (3-5-2)

  • Goalkeeper: Sommer
  • Defenders: Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni
  • Midfielders: Dumfries, Barella, Çalhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco
  • Forwards: Lautaro Martínez, Thuram

PSG vs Inter: Prediction

Paris Saint-Germain’s long-running pursuit of Champions League glory has often felt like a saga of frustration, with high-profile names and heavy investment failing to yield the ultimate prize. Lavish spending on marquee players like Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe brought star power but little continental success.

Ironically, their most promising shot at finally lifting the trophy appears to have come by shifting away from that very approach. Under a revamped strategy focused on nurturing young talent over assembling superstar line-ups, PSG look more cohesive and balanced than ever.

Psg vs inter preview

Despite finishing just 15th in the group stage and needing to battle through the knockout play-offs, they’ve been a formidable force in 2025. Still, their path hasn’t been flawless—home vulnerabilities exposed in the loss to Liverpool and a near-collapse away at Aston Villa show there are still cracks for Inter to exploit.

Contrasting domestic trajectories add another layer to the contest. PSG arrive riding the high of a potential treble, brimming with belief. Inter, on the other hand, are licking their wounds after surrendering the Serie A crown on the final day—amid swirling speculation about Simone Inzaghi’s future and interest from Al-Hilal.

Prediction: PSG 1-2 Inter
