A couple of days ago the U.S Cellular Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Ericsson had announced a major update in the 5G Era. The companies announced that they have successfully achieved the first extended-range 5G NR millimeter wave (mmWave) data call in the U.S.

The extended range data call milestone was completed in Janesville, Wisconsin over more than 5km with speed greater than 100 Mbps.

The companies in collaboration applied the extended-range software to commercial Ericsson hardware – including AIR5121 and Baseband 6630 – and a 5G CPE device powered by the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System with the Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module.

The 5G carrier aggregation will greatly improve the performance, capacity, and coverage of 5G networks.

This milestone demonstrates that service providers can now offer coverage and deliver 5G experience in a cost-effective way. The areas that previously had a lack of reliable connection can now receive broadband services.

This aggregation stands to bring new uses of 5G. this will bring 5G benefits to homes and businesses everywhere from both urban to rural communities.

In the coming days, the sub-6GHZ will be a standard form of 5G. but, it still is a challenge for many telecom operators. However, the new 5G aggregation will allow them to use multiple sub-6-GHz spectrum channels simultaneously to transfer data between stations and 5G mobile devices.

The companies have stated the speed of the 5G connection to be 2.5 Gbps. This is by aggregating 100 MHz + 60 MHz within 2.5 GHz(n41) TDD band. The new 5G carrier aggregation is the first one to feature both FDD/TDD and TDD/TDD aggregation.

Ericsson will launch the 5G carrier aggregation in the Q4 this year. While Qualcomm has already started shipping the samples of the Snapdragon X60 modem and it will come in the upcoming flagship smartphones which will use the new Modem-RF system.
