TRAI lifts the 100 SMS per day limitation for ‘Genuine Non-Commercial Users’

Still now, we are restricted to send more than 100 SMS in a day. This rule was implemented back in 2012 and to prevent spamming. If you need to send more than 100, the service provider will take charge of each of them. The minimum amount, in that case, will be 50p for each one.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) discussed this restriction with the stakeholders in its first ‘Open House Discussion’ via videoconferencing and decided to take back it. So, the telecom service providers, now, are free to provide unlimited SMS to their customers or can manage it as per their choice.

The abolishment of the rule is a part of the “Telecommunication Tariff (65th Amendment) Order 2020”. This step is mainly taken for the ‘genuine non-commercial bulk users’.

TRAI said, “Schedule XIII of the Telecommunication Tariff Order 1999 made it obligatory for telecom service providers to charge a minimum of 50 paise per SMS for every SMS exceeding 100 SMSes per SIM per day. The deletion of Schedule XIII thus implies another step of Trai in doing away of the tariff regulation and strengthening the regime of tariff forbearance.”

Nowadays, maximum of us are using online messaging apps like Facebook, Telegram, and so on. For that, we hardly required to use SMS. So, this change of the tariff is not going to affect us that much. But for the commercial purpose, a positive impact may fall.
