Tottenham’s Historic Away Record Is Keeping Their Premier League Survival Hopes Alive

The 2025-26 Premier League season has been so relentlessly miserable for Tottenham that finding any category in which they rank favourably feels like searching for a needle in a haystack. Their campaign has been defined by incoherence, creative bankruptcy in open play, a record-breaking winless run, and the genuine threat of relegation from the top flight for the first time in their history.

And yet, buried within the wreckage of this wretched season, is a statistic so counterintuitive it barely seems real.

Away from home, Tottenham have been the third best team in the Premier League this season.

The Most Bizarre Survival Story in Premier League History

Tottenham have earned 26 points from away games in 2025-26. Only Arsenal and Manchester City — the two clubs fighting for the title, the two best teams in the country — have earned more, with 32 each.

Every Champions League chaser, every solidly mid-table side, every other team embroiled in the relegation battle — all of them have a worse away record than Tottenham. It seems impossible. It is, nonetheless, true.

A small caveat: Spurs have played one more away game than many of the teams around them, which drops them to sixth on a points-per-game basis. Seven teams are also within one result of their total, meaning this picture could shift further by the end of the season. But none of that diminishes the central fact: Tottenham, while threatening to be relegated, have been among the Premier League’s most effective away teams this season.

The Home Catastrophe That Makes It All So Remarkable

The reason Tottenham’s away form is so striking is its contrast with their home record, which is among the worst in the division’s history.

In 2025-26, Spurs have earned just 11 points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. No team in the Premier League has won fewer, and only relegated Burnley have an equally poor home record. Tottenham avoid the very bottom of the home points table solely on goal difference — their home GD of -10 is one goal better than Burnley’s -11.

For supporters paying some of the highest ticket prices in the country, what they have witnessed has been deeply difficult to stomach. Spurs have won just two home Premier League matches from 17 this season. The first was the opening-day 3-0 win over Burnley. The second came in December — a 2-0 victory over Brentford. They are currently on a nine-game run without a home Premier League win.

The result of that catastrophic home form, combined with their unexpectedly solid away performances, is that Tottenham have earned 70.3% of their points this season in away games. That is the highest proportion ever recorded by any team in any season in Premier League history.

A Record That Has Never Been Broken

Only six teams in the history of the Premier League have ever earned more than 60% of their points in away games across a full season. Tottenham in 2025-26 are the first to approach the 70% threshold — and with three games remaining, they could be the first to break it.

This is a statistical outlier without modern precedent. It is also, historically, not a good sign.

What History Tells Us: A Warning for Survival

The teams who have historically won the greatest proportion of their points in away games have not generally fared well — either in terms of survival or subsequent seasons. The four clubs with the highest ever proportion of away points earned in completed Premier League seasons have all been relegated.

Of the ten teams with the highest proportion of points won away from home who were not relegated, only one improved their league position the following campaign. Two were relegated a year later. Five more saw their Premier League position fall by at least four places the following season.

The message from history is clear: relying heavily on away form rather than home form is not a sustainable model for Premier League existence. It is a structural imbalance that, over time, catches up with every team that has attempted to survive on it.

The Case for Survival: De Zerbi’s Impact and Favourable Fixtures

And yet, Tottenham are not dead yet. Far from it.

The transformation under Roberto De Zerbi has been striking in its pace. Spurs have won back-to-back games for the first time since August — including an impressive victory at Aston Villa on Sunday — and the turnaround in performance levels since De Zerbi’s appointment has given the club genuine grounds for optimism.

Their remaining three fixtures offer a plausible path.

Chelsea away on 19 May is the toughest on paper in terms of recent Tottenham history — they have won only once there in any competition in the Premier League era. But Chelsea are enduring an appalling run of their own: six home games without a win, four consecutive home defeats, and the small matter of an FA Cup final against Manchester City just days before facing Spurs. Motivation, energy, and focus may all be compromised.

Leeds visit next Monday. They are unbeaten in their last six away Premier League games, winning at Old Trafford in their most recent trip, so they are no soft touch. But Tottenham’s away strength — the quality that could theoretically flip at home — may make this a more even contest than Spurs’ home record suggests.

Everton on the final day have taken only one fewer away point than Tottenham this season, and from fewer games — making them a genuinely difficult visitor. Their form cannot be taken for granted.

Two of Three Remaining Games Are at Home

Here lies Tottenham’s fundamental challenge. With two of their three remaining matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — the scene of their most consistent failures this season — they will almost certainly need to do something they have managed only twice all campaign: win at home.

Their record against fellow bottom-half sides at home this season is particularly worrying: one win from eight attempts. Leeds and Everton both fall into that category.

Yet there is some hope. The nine-game home winless run came largely before De Zerbi’s arrival. The back-to-back wins represent the kind of momentum that can, occasionally, transform a side’s relationship with their own ground almost overnight. If the players who produced the Villa performance turn up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the same energy and defensive organisation, results that seemed impossible six weeks ago become at least imaginable.

The Legacy of This Season, Regardless of Outcome

Win or lose the relegation battle, Tottenham’s 2025-26 campaign has already produced something genuinely unique in Premier League history. The most away-reliant points record ever recorded. Third in the away table despite threatening relegation. A home record that would shame a bottom-three side in League One.

If they survive, their away form will be the reason. If they go down, their home record will be the reason. Both facts can coexist — and together, they tell the story of one of the strangest, most structurally imbalanced seasons any Premier League club has ever produced.
