Tottenham Hotspur’s first team players have decided to refund the travelling fans’ ticket expenses from their 6-1 defeat at Newcastle United. The team went down 5-0 at half time itself, and went on to concede another goal in the second half.

After the game, interim manager Cristian Stellini was sacked with his assistant, Ryan Mason, placed in charge of the first team until the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur players to refund fans after Newcastle thrashing

“As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. Sunday wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts,” the official statement from the players read.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right, starting against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together — and only together — can we move things forward.”

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy ‘took responsibility’ of the defeat in the letter he wrote to the fans after the game. But, a significant part of the frustration from the fans has been directed at him over the years. Several managerial and transfer choices have been questioned by fans, with silverware eluding them in spite of large investments.
