Spurs are expected to pay a hefty fee worth €50 million + €5 million in add-ons for the centre-back. He is the second Atalanta player to be scouted and signed by Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paritici following his appointment this summer, and the London club have already made several great investments. Romero will follow his teammate from Bergamo, Peterluigi Gollini to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Argentina international was named the Serie A defender of the year for 2021, and was a part of the national team squad that won the Copa America. He will be the replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who signed for Qatar club Al-Duhail, bringing his long tenure at the club to an end.

Atalanta will sign Merih Demiral from Juventus as the replacement for Romero, and will have the option to buy the player for €30 million after an initial loan deal. Both transfers can be announced officially in the upcoming days.
