Chelsea have made it to the finals of the 21/22 EFL Cup, after defeating rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 on aggregate. The Blues won the second leg 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to cement their spot in the final game of the competition.
Although they were on the losing side, Spurs put in a remarkable performance against their rivals. They came close to scoring on several occasions, but were unlucky to have some key decisions go against them.
Chelsea complete semi-final double to book Wembley spot
Both teams fielded a strong line-up, and while Conte played a system with 3 central defenders, Tuchel fielded a 4-2-2-2 line-up with Malang Sarr playing left-back alongside Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen in defense and Cesar Azpilicueta on the right.
The German’s hybrid formation was enough to get the better of former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte on the day.
Rudiger scored the only goal of the game, heading home a corner in the first half. The centre-back was also very good defensively and deserves to be named the man of the match.
Tottenham had two penalty decisions correctly go against them, after consultation with VAR. And, while Harry Kane thought he had pulled one back for the team, his goal was ruled out due to offside as well. Ultimately, it was another sour evening for Spurs as their 14-year wait for silverware carries on.Â
Chelsea will face the winner of the semi-final between Liverpool and Arsenal on the 27th of February, to determine who lifts the Cup this year.Â
