Shooting Guards are easily one of the most important roles in a basketball match. The role of a shooting guard has evolved over the course of many years. From only shooting the ball into the hoop, to now dribbling, passing and even taking it to the rack is also what is expected out of a shooting guard.
Here’s our ranking of the top shooting guards from this NBA season, from 5-1.
5. Donovan Mitchell – Utah Jazz
2019-2020 Stats: 24 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.3 APG.
The 24-year-old Mitchell proved in his first year only that he was amongst the top brightest young players in the league. This offseason he signed a massive 5-year contract worth a possible of $195 million. He has proved to be the go-to player for the Jazz, time and again. He is an exciting and extremely talented young player who is only in his 4th NBA season and continues to improve year after year.
4. Devin Booker – Phoenix Suns
2019-2020 Stats : 26.6 PPG, 6.5 APG, 4.2 RPG
Devin Booker has easily been the best player on a very underperforming Suns team for the past several years now. Ever since he came into the league he has been proving it to everyone that he can get a bucket on everyone. Last year, he led the Suns to an 8-0 record in the NBA bubble. This year, he will be joined by veteran Chris Paul in the backcourt to make it one of the most exciting backcourt duos in the league.
With Paul’s experience and Booker’s consistency, the Suns could be a tough team to face.
3. Bradley Beal – Washington Wizards
2019-2020 Stats : 30.5 PPG, 6.1 APG, 4.2 RPG
Bradley Beal has been one of the most deadliest scorers in the league. He has proven to get buckets at his will. But, last year he played on a very underachieving Wizards team on which he couldn’t really make a lot of difference. This year, with the acquisition of All-Star Russell Westbrook, the Wizards are easily looking like a Playoffs team.
When Paul George player alongside Westbrook, George had his best season. Should Beal experience something similar, he will for sure be an All-Star and even one of the best players in the league.
2. Paul George – Los Angeles Clippers
2019-2020 Stats : 21.5 PPG, 3.9 APG, 5.7 RPG
A six-time All-Star, Paul George is on one of the title-contending teams for the past two years. Last year they had a surprise exit in the second round of the playoffs.
George is one of the best shooters in the league. But offence isn’t all that Paul George has to offer. George is one of the best defenders in the league. He will be entering the season with something to prove alongside his All-Star companion Kawhi Leonard.
1. James Harden – Houston Rockets
2019-2020 Stats : 34.3 PPG, 7.5 APG, 6.6 RPG
James Harden has arguably topped this list and has been rightfully the best shooting guard in the league since the past 4-5 years now. Although his position with the Rockets looks a bit dicey, wherever James Harden plays, that team will be having the best Shooting guard on their roster. James Harden isn’t only just the best isolation offensive player in the league currently, he is arguably the best in NBA history. Year after year Harden has led the league in scoring – which is exactly what is expected off a shooting guard, to score. He will make an immediate and positive impact on whatever team he ends up playing for.
Other than these greats, players like C.J. McCollum, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jaylen Brown, Fred VanVleet and Victor Oladipo do deserve a mention on this list for their roles.
