Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli has shocked the entire nation by deciding to step down as India’s captain on Saturday. The decision came one day after team India’s Test defeat in South Africa.

The Indian cricketing fraternity has been quite irregular as the captaincy issue has gained a lot of publicity around the globe. Virat has resigned from his Test captaincy position but he has done a lot for team India and it’s very hard to break his record as a captain.

Virat stepped down and a lot of transformations are taking place in the Indian squad. Here’s a list of players who can be the next captain of the Indian team.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is the first choice for the captain, he’s been vice-captain of the test team and not to forget under his captaincy, Mumbai Indians won the IPL title 5 times. He also took the mantle from Kohli in white-ball cricket but due to his untimely injury, he couldn’t lead India in the second match against South Africa.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul’s performance in the last 6 months has been very consistent. He became a part of the Indian Test team on the away tour of England by chance because Mayank Agarwal was ruled out of the series. With his spectacular performances, he became the second choice after Rohit Sharma to lead the Indian team. With Virat stepping down as a captain and Rohit Sharma’s injury KL Rahul is a good candidate.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is the third choice for India’s Test captaincy after Virat’s resignation. BCCI has given unexpectedly good performance in the recent Test matches and BCCI rewarded him by making him the vice-captain of the Indian ODI squad for the South Africa tour when Rohit Sharma was ruled out. He has the potential to become the next captain for the future.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin had a great contribution to Test cricket. He has 84 caps to his name and is also very experienced in his profession. If BCCI decides to hand over the responsibility to someone with red-ball experience, Ashwin’s name would take no time to pop up.

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant had scored a century in India’s second innings in the third Test match versus South Africa and is a young option to BCCI. Pant is just 24 and he has already tasted captaincy with Delhi Captaincy (DC) in IPL. He’s an aggressive approach to the game and remains a good candidate as India’s next test captain.
