A slender 2-1 lead over Valladolid was enough for Atletico to get three points on the final matchday of La Liga, which in turn fetched them their first league title since the 2013-14 season. They were required to win to be sure of the top spot on the table, which was made possible by a Suarez goal in the 67th minute. We look at the teams who have lifted the most La Liga trophies in the competition’s history.

1) Real Madrid – 34 Titles

Real Madrid is the most successful team in the history of the Spanish top flight and in Europe, having won 34 La Liga titles to date, the most of any club in the league. Los Blancos have been a dominant force in Spain since winning the league title for the first time in 1931/32, with their most recent victory coming in 2019/20.

2) Barcelona – 26 Titles

Real Madrid’s arch-rivals, FC Barcelona are the second most decorated team in the country. Currently, with their tally of 26, their last title win was two seasons ago in 2018/19. Their first-ever La Liga came in 1929 before Real’s era kicked off.

3) Atletico Madrid – 11 Titles

Atletico Madrid have recently established themselves as one of Europe’s strongest teams and a formidable obstacle in the path of Real Madrid and Barcelona in their La Liga quest. This season’s champions have won the trophy 11 times in their history, the first of which came in 1939/40.

4) Athletic Club – 8 Titles

Athletic Club, despite having fallen out of favour in terms of league titles in recent years, remains in the top tier of the league, as shown by their eight titles. The club, which is notorious for only featuring players from the Basque region and origins, last won the championship in 1983/84.

5) Valencia – 6 Titles

Valencia have been a considerably strong team through the years and were particularly strong in the early 2000s when they clinched two league titles. Their most recent La Liga title was in 2003/04, and their first was in 1941/42.
