L’Equipe has released a new report of the highest paid football players in the world in 2022. The yearly figures have been converted into dollars from euros.

Top 10 highest paid football players in the world in 2022

10. Sergio Busquets (Barcelona) | $25.2m per year

The Barcelona midfielder has been one of the top defensive midfielders in the last decade. He has won almost everything on offer at club level with Barcelona and has also won the FIFA World Cup and Euro with Spain. The 33-year-old is still one of the backbones of Xavi’s Barcelona.

9. David de Gea (Manchester United) | $25.3m per year

The Spaniard has found his form back at Old Trafford. He is the highest paid goalkeeper in the world, however, his recent contract with Manchester United ends in 2023. He will be looking to extend his contract with the Red Devils.

8. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) | $26.9m per year

Kevin De Bruyne is arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League. He is key to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team. The Belgian will be looking to add the Champions League trophy to his trophy cabinet.

7. Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) | $29.3m per year

The Frenchman is expected to leave PSG this summer and join Real Madrid as a free agent. Mbappe is one of the best in the world right now and is expected to take on the mantle of Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu.

6. Eden Hazard (Real Madrid) | $29.9m per year

The former Chelsea player has been a shadow of himself after joining Real Madrid in 2019. He has been mostly on the sidelines after numerous injuries. He still has 2 years left on his contract but Real Madrid may be looking to sell the Belgian this summer.

5. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) | $29.9m per year

Bale has been one of the key players during the BBC era but his Real Madrid spell has been marred by multiple injuries. In recent years, he hasn’t been in the game plan of Real Madrid and they are not looking to renew his contract which ends this summer.

4. Gerard Pique (Barcelona) | $30.7m per year

Amid Barcelona’s financial crisis, Pique took a pay cut but he is still the highest paid football player in La Liga. The Spanish defender has been at the heart of Barcelona’s defence for the last decade and still has two years left in his current deal.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) | $34.8m per year

Ronaldo returned to his former club Manchester United last summer. He is still playing in the Premier League at 37 years of age and is ageing like fine wine. However, his Old Trafford return hasn’t gone as planned as United are once again looking to finish the season with no trophy.

2. Lionel Messi (Paris Saint-Germain) | $44.5m per year

The Argentine left Barcelona and joined PSG last summer as a free agent due to Barcelona’s financial struggles. However, he quite hasn’t found his feet in Paris and maybe a return to Barcelona is on the cards.

1. Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain) | $53.8m per year

Surprisingly, Neymar is at the top of this list of Top 10 highest paid football players, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Brazilian has come under criticism at PSG in recent times but he is still one of the best on his days.
