The world runs on money, and by 2024, there will be more money than ever before. At a record $14.2 trillion in total assets, there are currently 2,781 individuals on Forbes’ list of the world’s billionaires. They now represent 78 countries, as opposed to 77 in 2023. With 813 billionaires, total value $5.7 trillion, the United States continues to be the nation with the highest number of billionaires among its residents.

A total of 97 people have joined or returned to the ranks of the billionaire class in America, making them $1.2 trillion wealthier than they were a year ago. Notable additions include Taylor Swift, NBA legend Magic Johnson, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Eight of the top 10 richest Americans, or fourteen out of the top twenty, are citizens of the United States. However, with an estimated net worth of $233 billion, Frenchman Bernard Arnault, the CEO of luxury goods juggernaut LVMH, remains the wealthiest person on the planet.

With 406 billionaires valued at $1.3 trillion, China has the second-highest number of billionaires after the United States with 496 billionaires valued at $1.67 trillion last year. The primary causes are a significant decline in real estate and a stock market meltdown that has cost China’s ultra-rich billions of dollars over the last three years.

The most populous nation in the world, India, was ranked third. This year, there were 200 billionaires in the nation—a record 200, including 25 newcomers. Their combined value has increased to $954 billion, a more than 40% increase from $675 billion in the previous year. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of the massive conglomerate Reliance Industries, came in at number nine, and Gautam Adani, the chairman of the conglomerate Adani Group, based in Ahmedabad, came in at number seventeen. Both Indian nationals were listed in the top twenty.

Germany now ranks fourth overall with 132 billionaires, up from 126 the previous year. The combined wealth of Germans is $59 billion more than it was a year ago. The three cofounders of Munich-based data processing unicorn Celonis, Martin Klenk, Bastian Nominacher, and Alexander Rinke, are among the newcomers.
