The Indian automobile market witnessed a sharp rise in sales in the month of May 2024, with a number of models registering a notable year-on-year growth. In the top 10, the Maruti Suzuki models clearly stayed as Dominant lines. Surprisingly though, the Tata Nexon did not make it to the list for a second month in a row with just 11,457 units sold in May 2024. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the top 10 cars May 2024:

Leading the chart was the newly launched Maruti Swift with 19,393 units, registering a slight increase of 11.80% as against May 2023. The recently launched electric trim of Tata Punch was the second highest-selling car for December 2021 with a total sale of 18849 units Radical -70.34 % YoY. Maruti Dzire saw a growth of 41.94% as well.
Despite the slowdown, Hyundai Creta also could sell in the same fashion with 14,662 units registering a mere 1.47% growth. The other model is the Maruti WagonR, which at 14,492 units (-1.35% YoY) still sold more than the Segment-A best-seller in October 2020. Maruti Brezza grew by 5.88% whereas Maruti Ertiga’s sales surged by 31.96 %.
Next was the Mahindra Scorpio with a decent bump of 47.21 percent. Baleno on the other hand saw a decline of a notable 31.45% in sales. At the end of the day, the Maruti Fronx fared a 28.57% increase in sales. The sales across the top 10 cars in May 2024 amounted to 150,876 units, which is an increase of 14.01% over the same period last year.

The Swift selling 19,393 units in May 2024 against just 4,094 units in April 2024 as the old Swift was discontinued, is an exception. Tata Punch/EV retained the third spot but saw a marginal dip of 1.09% compared to April. Hyundai Creta on the other hand fell by 5.08% in sales while Dzire sales grew by 1.49% The sales dropped by 18.81% for Maruti WagonR, followed by the sales declined by 17.10% in case of Maruti Brezza.
Secondly, Maruti Ertiga observed a marginal 2.58 per cent growth and it must be mentioned that Mahindra Scorpio saw a drop in sales by 7.36 per cent. Maruti Baleno, Maruti Fronx both slid 8.59% and 11.23%, correspondingly. In total, 150,876 units for the top 10 cars sold in May 2024, +3.22% compared to April 2024’s sales!
