Meta-owned Instagram’s alternative to Twitter, called Threads, is set to launch earlier than expected. This comes after Twitter users expressed disappointment with the platform following Elon Musk’s announcement of new changes, including Rate Limit and the need for verification to access the tweet deck.
While reports about Threads had been circulating for some time, igniting speculation of a potential clash between Twitter owner Elon Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it remains uncertain if a showdown between the two CEOs will happen. However, what we do know is that the app that sparked the controversy might launch as soon as July 6.
The New Social Media App: Threads
For iPhone users, Threads, an Instagram app, can be found on the App Store. The listing indicates that the app will be available on July 6. However, it is likely that Meta will roll out the app gradually instead of granting immediate access to all users.
According to the app’s description, Threads is Instagram’s “text-based conversation app.” It serves as a platform for communities to discuss various topics, connect with favorite creators, and share ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.
Threads allow users to sign in with their Instagram account and follow the same accounts they already follow on the photo and video-sharing app. Additionally, users can keep the same username on the new platform as they have on Instagram, making the signup process hassle-free for existing Instagram account holders.
Functionally, the app operates similarly to Twitter, enabling users to share their thoughts with the world. People can then reshare, like, and comment on the posts, similar to how tweets are retweeted, commented on, and liked on Elon Musk’s platform.
As of now, Threads is only listed on the App Store and is not available on the Google Play Store. However, the app briefly appeared on the Play Store over the weekend but was taken down after a few hours. Development of Threads reportedly began in January of this year under the codename Project 92.
