Manchester City are almost in the Champions League finals this season, after defeating Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first leg of their quarter final clash. The Mancunian side were very clinical in their performance, unlike recent years, and showed great determination to record an impressive win at home.
Erling Haaland, Rodri and Bernardo Silva were all on target for Pep Guardiola’s side as they tore apart Thomas Tuchel’s new team to seemingly end their hopes of a double as well.
Is this finally Manchester City’s year in the Champions League?
The Spaniard opted to field his best attackers and best defenders in probably what was his strongest line-up. Moreover, John Stones popping up all around the pitch was probably one of the surprise factors from the Manchester City boss that worked wonders on the pitch.
Bayern looked lost without Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, while former Manchester City player Leroy Sane was one of the only bright sparks in their attack. But, Ederson had it all scouted as he was rarely tested otherwise.
Yann Sommer, on the other hand, was called to make several important saves to deny City from extending their lead. Dayot Upamecano also had a night to forget, being directly responsible for giving the ball away which led to City adding to their tally.
With the presence of a goalscoring machine like Haaland, it seems like things have finally started to click for Guardiola’s side in big games. And now, it remains to be seen whether their stars have aligned at last, because they might be facing Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
