Thiago Silva has extended his contract with Chelsea for another season, with his new deal running until 2023. The defender was always confident about renewing with the club, and the official announcement has been made now, after the contract was signed.

‘To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club, so I’m very happy to stay for another season,’ Silva said on the Chelsea website.

The Brazilian centre-back has made 56 appearances for Chelsea since joining them as a free agent in 2020. He was released from PSG after his contract expired that summer, following a defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

He has been one of the leaders in the Chelsea squad, and was a key figure as the team won the Champions League last season. Amidst reports that Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta could leave the club, the renewal of Thiago Silva will be great news for Chelsea fans who are fearing a defensive clearout due to the contracts expiring.
