Just when you thought there could only be one flaming Marvel hero on screen at a time, *VisionQuest* is quietly introducing a second one — and this one predates Johnny Storm by decades. A new promo has fans convinced the MCU is finally bringing in the original, Golden Age Human Torch.

### Who Is This Mystery Flaming Figure?

Marvel’s latest *VisionQuest* promo shows a man engulfed in flames standing inside Vision’s internal Mind Space. Based on growing speculation, this is Jim Hammond — Marvel Comics’ very first Human Torch, introduced all the way back in 1939, a full two years before Captain America even existed.

Sharp-eyed fans will recall a brief tease of this android hero in *Captain America: The First Avenger*, where he appeared as a powered-down exhibit labeled “Synthetic Man” at the 1943 Stark Expo. That connection strongly suggests *VisionQuest* is finally giving this dormant character his live-action debut.

### Two Human Torches, Zero Confusion (Hopefully)

To avoid mixing him up with Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm, Marvel appears to be branding this character simply as “JIM” — a nod to both his real name and his creator, Carl Burgos.

| Detail | Jim Hammond (VisionQuest) | Johnny Storm (Fantastic Four) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| First appearance | Marvel Comics #1 (1939) | Decades later in Marvel Comics |
| MCU debut tease | *Captain America: The First Avenger* (2011) | *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* (2025) |
| Nature | Android/Synthetic Man | Human with cosmic-ray powers |
| Where he appears | Vision’s Mind Space in *VisionQuest* | Returns in *Avengers: Doomsday* |
| Actor confirmed | Not yet revealed | Joseph Quinn |

### Why This Character Fits VisionQuest’s Story

Since Jim Hammond was originally created by Stark Industries scientist Phineas T. Horton, it makes sense he’d exist inside Vision’s Mind Space alongside other Stark-related AI constructs. There’s also a darker theory floating around: his older, vulnerable programming could make him an easy target for hijacking, potentially opening a door for a villain to infiltrate Vision from within.

Interestingly, most AI characters shown so far only appear inside the Mind Space in human form — except for a glimpse of Ultron’s full robotic body. That inconsistency has some fans wondering if JIM might step into the real world alongside Vision before the series wraps.

*VisionQuest* premieres October 14 on Disney+, running through December 2 — just over two weeks before Johnny Storm returns in *Avengers: Doomsday* on December 18.
