The truth is out there — and so is the most exciting cast announcement in sci-fi television in years. After three years of fan speculation, Ryan Coogler’s *X-Files* reboot at Hulu has officially found its two leads, and honestly? The choices couldn’t be more inspired

## The New Mulder & Scully — Who Are They Playing?

Deadwyler and Patel will be playing wholly new characters rather than new iterations of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. [Netflix](https://www.netflix.com/title/81763251) Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

**Danielle Deadwyler** is one of the most powerful performers working today — known for her devastating turn in *Till* (2022) and her acclaimed role in *The Piano Lesson*. She brings dramatic gravitas that few actors can match.

**Himesh Patel** is the perfect counterpart — charming, layered, and deeply watchable, having already earned an Emmy nomination for *Station Eleven*. The casting is actually a *Station Eleven* reunion — Patel and Deadwyler previously appeared together in the HBO Max miniseries, and their natural chemistry is already a known quantity.

## Why Coogler Is the Perfect Choice

Coming fresh off *Sinners* — which received 16 Oscar nominations — Coogler is arriving at this project at the absolute peak of his creative powers. He himself has teased the ambition: “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.” [Netflix Tudum](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/apex-release-date-cast-news)

The pilot is set to film from May through June in Vancouver — the same city where the original series shot its early seasons [Netflix Tudum](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/new-trailers-march-27-2026) — a detail that feels like a deliberate, loving nod to the show’s roots.

Even Gillian Anderson is excited. The original Scully has read Coogler’s script and told fans to have “an open mind and give it a chance because it’s going to be f***ing cool.” [Netflix Tudum](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/apex-release-date-cast-news)

The original *X-Files* ran for nine legendary seasons between 1993 and 2002 — [Wikipedia’s full history of *The X-Files*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_X-Files) shows just how monumental the franchise has always been.
