Memphis Depay was recently announced as a Barcelona player after almost a year of rumours linking the Dutch international to Camp Nou. And now that Depay has indeed made his long-awaited switch to join his former national team coach, a few interesting details regarding his contract have come out.
The forward has signed a two-year deal with Barcelona until 2023. But, the club has an option to extend his deal for another 12 months. He will have to be informed six months prior if that does happen, though. That means, Barcelona will have until 31st December 2022 to tell the player that they have triggered this clause.
After an unsuccessful spell at Manchester United, Depay was sold to Lyon. And even though the English club had the option to buy him back, they let Barcelona make the move for their former player instead. In 20/21, Depay scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in yet another remarkable season.
The Spanish giants have also included a humongous release clause in the player’s contract, valued at €400 million. Ronald Koeman will hope that the versatile forward can bring his best to the Barcelona attack since they need the finishing spark to convert more chances.
Depay was close to joining Barcelona in 2020, but Lyon did not receive the right bid for their captain. The transfer did ultimately go through, but the player made the switch as a free agent after deciding against renewing his contract with the Ligue 1 club.
