A daughter returns home to grieve her mother — and instead finds her father spiraling into conspiracy theories. Netflix’s Spanish psychological thriller *[The Truthers](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt41111628/)* has a genuinely unsettling premise, but doesn’t quite deliver on its promise.

#### The Premise

Ruth, a bartender living quietly in Berlin, hasn’t spoken to her parents in a while when she suddenly gets word that her mother died in a freak bathroom accident. Returning to her Spanish hometown, she finds her father, Martín, a former Civil Guard officer, has grown fixated on a missing boy and convinced that a local pharmaceutical company is behind it — rather than grieving his late wife. As the red flags pile up, Ruth begins to suspect her father may have had something to do with her mother’s death.

#### What Works

The film succeeds best as a character study rather than a thriller. Screenwriters Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona capture, with real precision, how easily a parent can fall down a misinformation rabbit hole and fracture their relationship with their child. Stéphanie Magnin and José Coronado carry that weight with grounded, powerful performances — Coronado’s paranoid conviction becomes genuinely infuriating, while Magnin’s slow unraveling anchors the film’s tension. Cinematographer Juana Jiménez also brings a striking visual contrast, framing Spain’s beauty against the story’s grim undercurrent.

#### Where It Falls Short

Despite its unsettling setup, the film’s plotting stays largely one-note — Ruth keeps circling the same red flags without the mystery ever deepening. The supporting cast, including Ruth’s ex-boyfriend Arón and her father’s new partner Berta, remain underdeveloped, serving mostly as props for the central drama rather than fully realized characters. A questionable final-act twist raises more questions than it answers, without enough groundwork to earn it.

#### The Verdict

*The Truthers* has a strong emotional foundation and a genuinely compelling lead performance, but its underdeveloped mystery keeps it from reaching its full potential — landing as a solid character study wrapped in an unconvincing thriller.
