The Toledo Truth Teller crew just wrapped one of their most emotionally loaded seasons yet, and star Domhnall Gleeson is opening up about what drove his character’s most selfless move. With **The Paper Season 2** now streaming in full, fans finally have answers about where Ned and Mare’s messy office romance lands.

## The Paper Season 2 Finale: Overview

Season 2 picked up right where the Season 1 finale left off, with Ned (Gleeson) and Mare (Chelsea Frei) navigating a secret relationship after their post-awards kiss. Things get complicated fast, from a hospital scare caused by a moldy muffin to Ned juggling a major investigative story with his growing feelings. By the finale, titled “The NS Board,” Ned makes an unexpected move: handing Mare the Glass Club death investigation, the biggest story he’d chased all season.

## Why Ned’s Big Gesture Matters

Gleeson described giving Mare the story as a genuinely selfless act rather than a move to win her back, explaining that Ned respects her too much as a journalist not to hand it over. He pointed out that beneath all of Ned’s frequent mistakes lies real decency and a sincere desire to practice the values he preaches about journalism. Showrunner Greg Daniels also revealed that the season’s structure was built around Ned juggling his romance and professional ambitions, letting his crusade blow up before pushing him to earn back Mare’s respect.
