If you thought the [FTX cryptocurrency collapse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FTX) couldn’t get more dramatic — wait until Netflix turns it into an 8-episode limited series. **The Altruists** is coming, and with Julia Garner leading the charge, this might just be the most talked-about show of late 2026.

## **What is The Altruists about?**

Netflix describes it as the story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison — two hyper-smart young idealists who tried to reshape global finance and ended up stealing $8 billion. It’s part love story, part financial thriller, and entirely based on real events that shook the world.

The series is co-created by **Graham Moore** (Oscar-winning writer of *The Imitation Game*) and **Jacqueline Hoyt**, with the first episode directed by **James Ponsoldt**. Netflix optioned multiple New York Magazine investigative pieces on SBF as source material — so expect depth.
