As reported before the game, Antony was left out of Ajax’s squad to face Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie. Despite the winger’s exclusion from the matchday line-up, the reigning champions were able to earn a 1-0 win.
The winger is the subject of intense transfer speculation from Manchester United. They most recently made a €80 million offer for the player which was rejected. As a result, an offer worth €100 million is being discussed internally by the Premier League club for him.
Antony misses out on Sparta Rotterdam match amidst Manchester United transfer rumours
Here is what new Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder had to say about the speculation surrounding Antony’s future:
“I want Antony to stay, so I don’t assume he will be sold.
“The money we are talking about is absurd these days. [But] we’ve already sold five or six base players. I don’t like it if we sell another player. I think we are very strong financially.”
“We play Champions League, I don’t think United do.”
The absence of Champions League football has been a detriment for Manchester United’s transfer activity this season. But, they have still been able to sign big names like Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.
The Frenkie de Jong saga seems like it will drag on to the last few days of the transfer window, while the same seems to be the case for Antony at this point.
