The Last of Us Renewed for Season 3 Ahead of Season 2 Premiere

Just ahead of its highly anticipated Season 2 premiere on Sunday, April 13, 2025, The Last of Us has officially been renewed for a third season. The news, which was first reported by Deadline, isn’t a huge surprise, given that the showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have already indicated that telling the full story of The Last of Us Part II would require at least three seasons, if not four.

While it’s obviously too soon to know for sure, whether a fourth season will be required will likely depend on how much Season 2 propels the narrative forward. Nonetheless, HBO seems confident in the creative trajectory of the show, and willing to keep going if necessary. HBO’s Executive Vice President and Head of Drama Series and Films Francesca Orsi hailed the team’s efforts and added that the second season is such a “monumental achievement.”

“It can’t be overstated how proud we are of what Craig, Neil, and the entire team have accomplished,” Orsi said. “Season 2 is extraordinary, and we’re excited to see their storytelling continue into Season 3.” Neil Druckmann echoed the sentiment, expressing gratitude to fans for their support and highlighting the show’s faithful adaptation as a major personal milestone. He credited co-creator Craig Mazin and the partnership with HBO and PlayStation Productions as key to the show’s success.

“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully has been a career highlight,” Druckmann said. “We’re thrilled to share more of this story.” Mazin added that Season 2 has already exceeded their expectations, thanks to the incredible cast, crew, and continued collaboration with HBO. However, he was clear that the show will not go beyond the storyline of the games, so if three seasons are enough, that’s where it will end. A fourth season will only happen if the narrative requires it.
