## The Story: A Missing Girl and a Family With Secrets

Set in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, the story centres on the wealthy Van Laar family, who control the land and run Camp Emerson. In 1975, 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar disappears with almost no explanation and few clues. Detective Judy Luptack and the local authorities take up the case, but the deeper they dig, the clearer it becomes that the family is hiding dark secrets. That includes a strangely similar disappearance more than a decade earlier. The novel uses a split timeline across several decades, which should give the series plenty of room for intrigue.

## The Cast: A Big, Stacked Ensemble

[Maya Hawke](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Hawke) stars as Judy Luptack, a young investigator trying to unravel the mystery. Kerry Condon plays Alice Van Laar, the missing girl’s mother, whose life is turned upside down. Nell Fisher plays Barbara, while Benjamin Walker and Tracy Letts play the Van Laar men, Peter Van Laar III and II. Damon Gupton plays Denny Hayes, Judy’s colleague at the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

The ensemble also includes Ella Rubin as camp counselor Louise Donnadieu, Susannah Perkins as camp director T.J. Hewitt, John Gallagher Jr. as escaped convict Jacob Sluiter, Lola Kirke as Delphine Barlow, and Colton Ryan as John Paul McClellan Jr. A long list of supporting players rounds out the cast.

## Behind the Camera

Four directors share the eight episodes. Cory Finley directs episodes 1 and 2, Quyen Tran directs 3 and 4, showrunner Liz Hannah directs 5 and 6, and Meera Menon directs 7 and 8. Co-showrunners Moore and Hannah said they hope viewers fall in love, and in hate, with these characters as much as they have.

## Filming Wraps Up

Production began on June 12, 2026, across upstate New York, with the Hudson River Valley and the Adirondack Mountains as key locations. After roughly a three-month shoot, filming started wrapping in late September and is expected to finish fully this month. Cast members are already posting farewells. Romy Fay, who plays camper Michelle, shared behind-the-scenes photos, and Kai James, who plays Christopher, thanked everyone involved.

## When Will It Release?

Netflix hasn’t set a date. With around six months of post-production typical, What’s on Netflix expects the series to land in spring or summer 2027. That’s an estimate, so treat it as a guess for now.
