Barcelona managed to overcome their arch rivals Real Madrid 4-0 at their own stadium, putting an end to their losing streak in the fixture. While it was one of the best moments of the season for the winners, Real Madrid were at their worst in the defeat.
Nacho Fernandes, the captain for the day, acknowledged that fact in his post match interview. The defender was shipped out to left-back as David Alaba was deployed in centre-back. However, Ousmane Dembele managed to get the better of the skipper several times, earning two assists in the game.
What’s next for Real Madrid
Ferland Mendy was dearly missed in the loss against Barcelona, alongside star striker Karim Benzema. The number 9 was ruled out of the game due to a calf injury he sustained in their previous outing, and could not train in time to return to the team.
Fede Valverde was deployed as a False 9, but the Uruguayan was not enough to replace one of the best strikers in the world in Benzema. And as a result, Real Madrid lacked the link up play and the finishing of the 34-year-old in front of goal.
But despite their loss, Real Madrid are still on track for the season. They remain at the top of the league table with a nine-point lead. And, they also have a Champions League quarter final tie set up with Chelsea, whom they met last season in the semi-final.
Following the international break, Carlo Ancelotti will need to find a way to restore momentum for his side ahead of their two-legged fixture with the West London club.
