The Cupertino giant is set to revamp its Apple Watch lineup in 2022

According to respected Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a complete revamp of its Apple Watch lineup for 2022, including an update to the Apple Watch SE and a new Apple Watch with a rugged design aimed at sports athletes.

In the most recent issue of his Power On newsletter, Gurman stated that, in addition to the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple is planning an update to the Apple Watch SE for 2022. The Apple Watch SE debuted in September 2020 and has since served as a mid-tier option for customers. The Apple Watch SE has the same design as the Apple Watch Series 6, but it lacks advanced features like an always-on display, a blood oxygen sensor, and ECG functionality.

Apple’s “SE” devices, such as the iPhone SE, are typically not updated for several years. Given that Apple did not release an update this year, a new model can be expected in 2022. Gurman did not say what to expect from the new Apple Watch SE, but it may have a slightly different design and health features that are more in line with higher-end models.

Apple is planning an entirely new Apple Watch aimed at sports athletes, in addition to an update to the existing Apple Watch SE. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple was considering releasing a ruggedized version of the Apple Watch with increased durability. According to Gurman, the new Apple Watch will have a “ruggedized” design with a case that is more resistant to scratches, dents, falls, and other abrasions.

Before its official unveiling, rumours and reports predicted that the Apple Watch Series 7 would have a flat-edged design. Those rumours were unfounded, and the Apple Watch Series 7 was revealed to have a more curved design. Those rumours, on the other hand, could have been referring to the rumoured “rugged” Apple Watch, which is still purely speculative.

Apple is currently collaborating with Nike to create limited-edition Apple Watch Series 7 and SE models that feature a unique watch face and are paired with limited-edition watch bands. These models are designed and built in the same way as the standard Apple Watch.

The current Apple Watch lineup includes the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple Watch SE, and the 2017 Apple Watch Series 3. Apple is now rumoured to be expanding the lineup to more customer demographics in 2022, such as athletes who may have previously decided against purchasing an Apple Watch due to its durability.
