ASUS ROG Ally: Specs and Features

The design choices of the ASUS ROG Ally mobile gaming console showcase similarities with existing handheld devices, featuring chunky handles, ergonomic grips, and a resemblance to popular models like Valve’s Steam Deck and One-Netbook’s OneXPlayer. ASUS also explored the inclusion of detachable gamepads, a feature that only a few consoles have incorporated into their designs.

The console boasts a 7-inch 120Hz panel with a 5ms response time, delivering a maximum resolution of 1080P FHD and up to 500 Nits brightness. Weighing in at approximately 669g, the ASUS ROG Ally offers a comfortable and portable gaming experience.

It features two thumbsticks, a D-Pad, and the traditional ABXY button arrangement commonly found on modern handheld consoles, with the exception of Nintendo, which opted for a reversed button layout. Additional buttons and trigger sticks can be found on the top and back of the device.

In an official collaboration with AMD, ASUS has integrated the Ryzen Z1 processor family into the ROG Ally. These processors are specifically designed for handheld gaming consoles and are available in two variants: the basic Z1 and the higher-end Z1 Extreme.

Both variants feature the Zen 4 CPU and RDNA 3 GPU. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme offers 8 cores, 16 threads, 12 RDNA 3 cores, and 24 MB cache, while the Ryzen Z1 provides 6 cores, 12 threads, 4 RDNA 3 cores, and 22 MB cache.

Notably, the ASUS ROG Ally supports the ASUS XG Mobile external GPU (eGPU), which incorporates powerful NVIDIA graphics equivalent to the RTX 4090 family. This feature enhances the gaming performance of the console, ensuring smooth gameplay and stunning visuals.

The ASUS ROG Ally is poised to deliver an exceptional gaming experience, combining its powerful hardware, ergonomic design, and compatibility with external GPUs. It promises to be a versatile gaming console for enthusiasts seeking high-performance gaming on the go.
