Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown is an open-world racing game that contains a 1:1 reproduction of Hong Kong. It was first announced in 2020, with a September 2022 release date that was later pushed out to 2023.
It has now been pushed back to “early 2024.” The new release window was disclosed during a live stream that included more than 20 minutes of Solar Crown gameplay.
Explore an unlimited environment, compete in races, and eventually gain finer residences and fancier cars in Test Drive Unlimited. The above film of an initial version focuses on its team-based multiplayer, with lots of sloppy racing and fleeting forays into on-foot communal places.
The latter all appear slightly eerie, either empty and cavernous like an airport hangar or crowded with identical, dancing NPC models, and all recalling the nouveau riche pretensions of a cryptocurrency metaverse in 2023.
There are some framerate issues throughout, which I think is expected for Alpha, and a fair trade-off for seeing a lot of video instead of a carefully trimmed trailer. The TDU games were more enjoyable as a peaceful driving experience than as racing games, and I’m still interested in exploring its environment.
Solar Crown will go into closed beta next month, and you can join it on the official website. Nacon is also the publisher of the critically panned Lord of the Rings: Gollum and the owner of Daedalic, who recently declared that it would no longer develop video games internally. They’re also the people behind the upcoming RoboCop: Rogue City game.
