The arrival of Tesla Motors in India has been a part of the national dialogue for a long time. Many union and state ministers have mentioned the brand’s intent to be a part of the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative. However, India is not friendly in importing cars made by tesla. So the effort which Tesla made into coming to India has been a challenging load. The penetration of the technology suggests that as of today, China boasts a 5% electric vehicle population, where India has less than 1%.
As announced by Karnataka’s chief minister B S Yediyurappa, Tesla will begin manufacturing in India out of Bangalore in the coming months. It has registered an Indian subsidiary under the name Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited in Bangalore last month.
Tesla India Fan page on social media last month stated that the brand would come to India “as promised.” We can conclude that Tesla will follow a similar model in India as it did in its Gigafactory in China, which is good news.
Like in China, the Model 3 will arrive in India via the CKD route, and the model will be assembled in Indian facilities. According to sources, the price in India may be between RS 40-55 lakh, the value offering of the Model 3 could revitalize a segment that is fast going out of fashion.
Tesla is also currently in talks with various other states of India, to discuss showroom spaces for Tesla cars. But, we still have to wait for official confirmations from the brand to seriously outline a time frame for the rollout of Tesla’s electric cars in India.
